Lois AnnaBelle “Annie” Carnes, age 100 of New Castle passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023 peacefully in her sleep at the home of her daughter surrounded by family. She was born March 2, 1922 in Delaware County, Indiana, the daughter of Maple and Mina (McClelland) Bird.

She married Carlile “Bud” Carnes, September 29, 1939 whom she was married for 63 years prior to his death in November 2002.

Annie was a member of the Blountsville Christian Church and most recently attended Smyrna Baptist Church in Spiceland, Indiana. Annie worked for 15 years at Blountsville and Hagerstown School Cafeterias. She retired from New Castle State Hospital in 1992 after 15 years in the bakery. She also owned and operated “Annie’s Country Kitchen” in Mooreland, Indiana. She loved baking cookies for her grandchildren, decorating cakes and fixing family dinners. She also loved playing Aggravation with family and visiting friends.

She leaves behind six sets of five generations. She is survived by one son, Stephen Carnes (Marcia) of Kokomo; one daughter, Barbara Carnes-Severance (Charles) of New Castle; eight grandchildren, Carol Rains (John Hinkle), Peggy Prosser, Ruth Gard of New Castle, Dawn Sorrell (Gary) of Mooreland, Brad Carnes-Stine (John) of Virginia, Allison Irvin (William) of Illinois, Penny Masters (Dan) of Middletown, Dean Severance (Cindi) of Bloomington, IN. 13 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren, one brother-in-law, John Carnes, many nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted grandchildren and her former daughter-in-law, Rosemary Conner.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carlile “Bud” Carnes; one infant daughter, Priscilla Carnes; one grandson Ryan Carnes; one great grandson, Richard Emmons; three brothers, Virgil, Harold and Frank Bird; several brothers and sisters-in-law and her parents.

Services will be held at 12:00 PM Tuesday February 7, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at South Mound Westlawn Addition.
