Chester Keith Sanders, 95, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Saturday, January 28, 2023.

He was born in Carthage, IN on July 21, 1927 to Leamon and Erma (Jackson)

Sanders.  He grew up in New Castle and lived most of his life in the Hagerstown area.  Chester was a 1946 graduate of New Castle High School.  Following high school, he served with the US Marine Corps in the latter stages of WWII, and then re-enlisted with the US Navy serving on Navy Destroyer DDE-508 USS Cony, in the Korean Conflict.  Chester served for many years as Postmaster in Hagerstown and was a part-time farmer.  Chester was a member of South Side Church of Christ in New Castle serving as an Elder, and later attended New Testament Church of Christ in Hagerstown.  Chester was an active member of American Legion Post 333.  He was also a former member of Hagerstown Lions Club and Hagerstown Rotary Club.

Chester’s survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Jean Sanders.  He had 3 sons, Doug Sanders, Dan Sanders and John Sanders (Kathy); 4 grandsons, Bryan Sanders, Brandon Sanders (Kendra), Eric Sanders (Kim) and Nolan Sanders (partner Myranda) and 3 great-grandsons, Braydon Sanders, Christian Sanders and Riley Sanders.  Chester also had nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.

In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by a sister, Lettie Sweigart.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Chester’s Hospice Team for their dedicated services and support.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, February 1, at the Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown.  Services will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 2, also at the Culberson Funeral Home.  Pastor Paul Gearhardt will officiate.  Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery with military graveside honors.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Reid Foundation for Hospice and American Legion Post 333.
