Richmond Civic Theatre is performing a musical version of what its leaders call a beloved film.

The G-rated “It’s a Wonderful Life — The Musical” opens Thursday, Dec. 12, and ends Sunday, Dec. 22.

It’s based on the screenplay for the 1946 cinema hit starring Jimmy Stewart. The film, set around Christmas Eve, is shown this time of year on television.

John Faas, RCT executive director, said the musical faithfully follows George Bailey’s life from his childhood dreams to his midlife disappointments and beyond, as viewers take a journey to discover whether his life has mattered at all.

Cinematically scored and theatrically staged, this adaptation directed by Ruthanne Munger breathes musical life into a familiar story while retaining the warmth, humor and pathos of the original, Faas said.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets purchased in advance range from $10 to $20. Seats cost $2 more at the door. Tickets can be purchased at gorct.org or 765-962-1816.

The show runs 2 hours and 30 minutes and has one 15-minute intermission.
