Milton’s tornado warning system is currently out of service, and repairs can’t be made immediately.

That news was shared with residents in a March 11 news release from Milton Police, Milton-Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, town council and township leaders.

“Our No. 1 priority is your safety, and we are working diligently on this issue,” the release said.

Milton officials have been working with their local vendor since they became aware of the issue during a February equipment test. Some of the system has been sent to the manufacturer to determine repair possibilities and a timeline for replacement parts or replacing the entire system. No option is available quickly, the release said.

Residents will hear sirens from Cambridge City, Pershing and Dublin, but they might be faint because of the distance.

In the meantime, first responders and community leaders note several ways to stay informed about weather when storm risks are higher:

  • Follow Milton police, fire and community social media pages to find leaders’ posts before, during and after weather events.
  • Sign up for town alerts via text message and email by sending a name and cell phone number to miltonclerktreasurer@yahoo.com and Wayne County Emergency Management Agency’s alerts through local.nixle.com/register.
  • Tune into local and Indianapolis television and radio stations
  • Monitor National Weather Service forecasts at forecast.weather.gov.
  • Buy a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio to receive emergency alerts. They’re inexpensive and easily available, the release said.

In addition, they recommend visiting cdc.gov/tornadoes for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s storm preparation tips. Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week took place March 9-15 in Indiana.
