Organizations are beginning to announce events marking the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and recruit participants for initiatives throughout the year.
Ivy Tech Community College is organizing its annual “Living the Dream” breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at its Johnson Hall, 2357 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
It’s free and open to the community, but advance registration is required at engage.ivytech.edu/s/events. The meal is sponsored by American Water Charitable Foundation.
This year’s speaker is Nick O. Rowe, who has served as president of Kentucky American Water, senior vice president of American Water and other leadership roles for more than 35 years. He also wrote “The Goodwill Jar: Reflections on Leadership and Legacy” and is founder and principal consultant of N.O.R. Solutions LLC.

Also on Jan. 20, Earlham School of Religion is offering a free online lecture by the Rev. Bob Hunter at 7 p.m. called “What Would Martin Luther King Do Now?” The public can register for the Zoom program at bit.ly/ESR_MLK2025.
Before retirement, Hunter of Richmond was a diversity and justice specialist for Indiana Division of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He twice won the Frieda Dawkins Award for his work in civil and human rights.
NAACP Branch #3066 is offering an interest survey to reach potential members and share what the organization does locally. Participants can choose to join committees on topics such as economic empowerment, education, health, youth work, environmental justice, criminal justice, political action and membership.
