Carol Mattingly, 65, of Hagerstown, went to be with Jesus and her heavenly family in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 13, 2022 following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on July 15, 1957 in New Castle, a daughter of the late John C. Root Jr. and Mary Root Cowen.
Carol grew up in Hagerstown, IN and at a young age travelled with her family in evangelistic work. She attended Hagerstown Schools and later moved to Hobe Sound, FL with her sister, Mary, where she graduated from Hobe Sound Christian Academy. Carol met Phil Mattingly while in High School and they were later married on July 30, 1976. She was a homemaker and worked at the BMV in Muncie, IN for many years. Carol enjoyed her flowers, playing piano, baking, scrapbooking and raising three boys. She was a faithful member of New Life Holiness Church where she served as Sunday School Treasurer, Piano player and directed Christmas programs and special events. She was most of all a loving wife, mother, grandmother and devoted Christian.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Phil Mattingly; three sons, Brian Mattingly of Hagerstown, Drew (wife: Misha) Mattingly of Economy and Steve (wife: Autumn) Mattingly of New Castle; six grandchildren, Tameeka, Braylen, Deklin, Daxton, Dawson and Cooper; three siblings, John (wife: Linda) Root of Economy, Michael (wife: Gayle) Root of Decatur, Alabama and Robert “Bob” (wife: Natalie) Root of New Castle numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Kinsler Mattingly; a sister, Mary Root and step-father, Rev. Kenneth Cowen.
Memorial contributions may be offered to Gideons International for Bible distribution.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Sproles Family Funeral Home in New Castle with Pastor Ron Coleman officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown.
Friends may call from 6 – 8:30 pm, Friday, September 16, 2022 at the funeral home and from 9:30 – 11 am prior to the service on Saturday.
