Gummy bears, sharks and penguins are among the subjects that local high school students drew, painted or sculpted for the All Wayne County High School Art Exhibition.

The display is open through May 17 at Richmond Art Museum, 350 Hub Etchison Parkway. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays, and admission is free.

Students from Centerville, Hagerstown, Lincoln, Northeastern, Richmond and Seton Catholic high schools are represented.

The exhibit showcases the work of teen artists and promotes appreciation and study of fine art among young people.

Works made during the current academic year by any Wayne County student enrolled in a high school program (public, private or homeschooled) may be submitted by their teacher for consideration.

The exhibit is juried. Non-monetary awards are given to recognize and support students’ artistic achievements.

Seniors are well represented among the winners, earning 16 prizes, including first and third place overall. However, four of the awards went to freshmen. Sixteen sophomores received awards, including second place overall. Juniors won 13 honors.

Education has long been important to leaders of the museum, which was founded in 1898. Staff say RAM is the only independent art museum to be housed within a public school in the United States.
