Stephen Taylor May, 80, died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at his home in Key Largo, FL.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Virgie (Key) May and his daughter Tandi (May) Brownell. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Pennie (Perry) May; his daughter, Tauni (May) McCullough (Joe); his grandchildren, Joshua McCullough (Claire), Toria McCullough (Josh Stewart), Drew Brownell (Jaclyn Dargie), Brad Brownell (Lexie Alexander) and Landon Brownell (Sarah); 8 great grandchildren and countless friends.
Born November 8, 1942 in Kansas City, OK, and then raised in Steeleville, MO, he lived his adult life in Centerville, IN.
After graduating from Beach Grove High School in 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Pennie, at a quaint church in Germantown, IN. They built their lifelong home in Centerville, IN where they raised their two daughters, three grandsons, hosted an abundance of parties, provided many meals, and you could always find their door open.
Steve worked at Philco Ford, spent a decade building homes, held the position of District
Manager with Flagman Gas and sold insurance when he retired from Western Southern where he made numerous friends and connections. Steve co-managed the local “Cherokee Campground’- always keeping the pool cleaned and the fire going. Steve shared his love of camping with his family developing “The Cherokee Camping Club”.
In his retirement years, Steve worked as a custodian and drove a bus for Centerville Schools, where he retired only eight years ago. Steve enjoyed his daily route and driving the bus for sporting events and field trips.
Once Cherokee Camp closed, Brookville Lake became the gathering place for the next
generation. Steve took many fishing trips on his pontoon, with his grandsons, son in law and other friends and family. Steve and Pennie hosted anniversary and birthday parties throughout the summer. A lot of memories were made at Brookville Lake and traveling the country. Steve and Pennie have been spending their retirement years being snowbirds at their winter home in Key Largo, FL.
Steve is now reunited with his parents, grandparents and his daughter, Tandi, in addition to numerous family and friends. Steve, also known as Dad, Grandpa and Pa, but never late to dinner, will be missed and certainly not forgotten. He will be remembered for his loving heart, soul recharging hugs, endless pestering, and always wanting to know when you’re coming back over to visit and to ”bring him something” (snack).
In honor of Steve and Pennie’s generosity throughout the years, food donations can be made to any local food bank.
A memorial service will be announced in the near future.
