Communities in Schools of Wayne County’s service to children’s families continues under new leadership. The nonprofit organization has announced Sarah Scott as its new executive director, effective Feb. 16. Scott has served as the interim executive director since August.

Scott came to the organization as a site coordinator and soon joined the administrative team. Within her three years of service, she’s demonstrated the student-centric work and leadership that CISWC affirms will support its initiatives for the foreseeable future.

Scott’s appointment as interim followed the retirement of long-time CISWC Executive Director, Becky Murray. Murray served for 11 years, ensuring the organization remained fiscally viable to support families in their pursuit of a quality education.

“I believe deeply in the impact this organization has on students and families, and I am eager to continue building on the strong foundation that has been created,” Scott said in a news release. Scott thanked Murray for her years of dedication, unwavering support of the CISWC staff and for helping shape her into a leader.

Under Murray’s leadership, CISWC supported families during the COVID-19 pandemic, connecting them with resources in a time of uncertainty. And in 2024, the organization case-managed nearly 800 students, with 86% showing academic improvement, 87% improving attendance, and 96% showing improved behavior.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Becky since I joined the CIS board almost three years ago. She clearly has a passion for helping the children and families in Wayne County and has demonstrated that passion through her leadership of CIS. Whether helping one child or 100, she has always done everything she could to make sure that ‘her kids’ in Wayne County were taken care of. She will be sorely missed, and because of all that she has given to CIS for the last 11 years, the organization is in a great place to continue its great work in Wayne County,” said Shane Bietry, board chair, in a news release.
