A faith-based women’s recovery center for substance misuse is another step closer to opening in Cambridge City.
Jacque Barricklow, Erin Hackleman and Tonya Proffitt discussed initial plans for The Dwelling Place recovery home with town leaders at council’s July 13 meeting.
Already volunteering in jail and street ministry, they receive frequent regional inquiries for help since Richmond’s Cross Road and Connersville’s House of Ruth are regularly full.
Before buying real estate in Cambridge City, the Connersville-based board wanted to confirm community support.
Barricklow, who grew up in Cambridge City, said she was familiar with council meetings after attending many with her father, the late Ed Zook, who previously was the town’s public works manager.
Dwelling Place’s board secured 501(c)(3) nonprofit status more than a year ago while searching for the right place. The location they’re currently favoring wasn’t shared during the meeting, and the trio said they’re open to other options if needed because they want to be where they’re wanted.
However, they need a facility address to apply for many grants, so completing a purchase is a timely concern.
Dwelling Place would initially serve approximately five women before expanding the 12-month program. Proffitt, who successfully went through the recovery process after years of challenges, would oversee the participants as director and share insights on turning her life around.
The program wouldn’t be a detox center or offer medication-assisted treatment.
Before proceeding, Dwelling Place leaders said they wanted to confirm a local need with town officials for their services.
After their presentation, council President Jim McLane said their program is “sorely needed,” and councilor Debbie McGinley called it “really special.”
Police Chief Richard Roberts said Western Wayne isn’t immune from addiction.
Noting that additional legal research is needed, town attorney Bob Bever said Cambridge City’s Board of Zoning Appeals might need to approve Dwelling Place’s building usage if it selects property in a commercial district.
