Cambridge City has chosen a name for its new outdoor performance venue, and several concerts are scheduled.

Forward Wayne County, whose partners on the project include Cambridge City Main Street, Cambridge City Area Chamber of Commerce and Wayne County Foundation, announced March 11 that the venue will be called Creitz Park Pavilion. Tonya Leguina suggested the name during a recent contest. Park board and town council members narrowed the suggestions for public voting.

The five finalists also included Creitz Commons, The Gathering on Green, Canal Arts Pavilion and The Canal-Side Commons.

During Cambridge City council’s March 9 meeting, Cambridge City Main Street’s Troy Lewis received permission for several concert dates at the pavilion and nearby downtown events, including the farmers market.

The public is invited to Creitz Park Pavilion’s grand opening ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. Friday, May 8, followed by a free evening of entertainment.

Cambridge City Main Street also plans concerts on June 13 and Aug. 8. Lincoln High School’s Class of 1976 is organizing a concert as part of its Sept. 12 reunion.

Special events

Council granted permission to close portions of Foote Street on the second Saturday between May and October for several upcoming events along/near U.S. 40.

The Spring Antique Show will be May 9. The annual collectors’ jar show could take place June 13.

The Artisan Fair is July 11, and the Junk in the Trunk sale is Aug. 8.

Cambridge City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Canal Days will be Sept. 12-13.

The Fall Antique Show will be Oct. 10.

Farmers market

Council approved street closures for the farmers market between 8 a.m. and noon Saturdays from June 20 to Oct. 17, although the market might close earlier in the season if drought affects growing. The market will be open from 9 a.m.-noon.

The market moved back downtown last year after moving a block south. Lewis said foot traffic was nearly four times greater along U.S. 40 than the previous year.

About 100 to 150 shoppers visited weekly last year; some were local and others were from Cincinnati, Carmel and Dayton areas.

Lewis said the visible market also drew shoppers into businesses.

Six to eight vendors appeared last year, and he hopes to get to 12 this year. A callout meeting for vendors is set for 7 p.m. March 31 at Golay Community Center, 1007 E. Main St.

Town cleanup

Council approved the annual spring Caring for Cambridge cleanup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25. The town will offer free dumpsters at its maintenance building for residents while space allows. Riverside Cemetery will be open for yard waste disposal.

Volunteers are needed for the event and to help residents who need assistance cleaning their properties.
