Sophia Tinkle from Hagerstown High School, the only freshman in the elite field of 16 players, won the South Regional semifinal but lost the championship match June 6.
Tinkle defeated Marin Paris from Franklin Central High School in the semifinal match 6-1, 7-5. But Ava Muckerheide from Shelbyville High School defeated Tinkle in the championship match 7-5, 6-3.
Eight singles players competed in the South Regional, including Tinkle, and eight competed in the North Regional for the right to advance to the state championship round, which will be played June 12 and June 13.
North Central High School in Indianapolis was the host site for the regional round of the Indiana High School Athletic Association individual state tournament.
