A Richmond 14-year-old was arrested Sept. 12 after a threatening message was posted using the online service Snapchat.
According to a Richmond Police Department news release, the Federal Bureau of Investigation tipped the Wayne County Emergency Operations Center about the message, and RPD was informed. The FBI provided information about the Snapchat account that helped identify the teen. Further investigation found other digital connections to the teen.
First-shift RPD patrol officers located the teen and a foster parent at their residence, the release said. During an interview, the teen confirmed the Snapchat and Cash App accounts were the teen’s. The teen was detained and lodged in a detention center.
“We are committed to ensuring that our children remain safe and that our schools continue to be environments where young people are free to learn, grow and thrive without fear,” RPD Chief Kyle Weatherly said in the release.
RPD continues to investigate the matter, the release said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact RPD at 765-983-7247.
