A helicopter and drone were among the tools used by law enforcement to pursue a suspect near U.S. 27 after multiple shots were fired, resulting in an injury, police said.
Shortly after 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to Garden City Trailer Court, 4881 N. U.S. 27, after a disturbance was reported outside of an abandoned mobile home on Cherry Street.
Wayne County Communications received information that a male suspect had brandished a firearm, pointing at people in the trailer court, according to Sheriff Randy Retter.
As officers responded, they learned that multiple shots had been fired by one of the persons involved toward another individual, and one person might have been injured during the altercation, he said.
Richmond Police Department and Indiana State Police also arrived on scene and learned the suspect might have fled into a wooded area east of the vacant mobile home on Cherry Street.
Multiple resources were utilized in an effort to locate the suspect, including Richmond Fire Department Drone Team and Indiana State Police Aviation.
Attempts to locate the suspect were unsuccessful, Retter said Thursday night, but the suspect’s identity was determined and investigating units are following up on leads.
Officers did locate and identify a victim who had a superficial wound to one arm. The victim refused medical treatment.
Retter said names of the suspect and victim were not being released Thursday night while the investigation was ongoing.
Initial information indicates Thursday’s shooting is related to a case that Richmond Police Department is investigating, said Retter, who is considering it an isolated incident and not a random act.
A stolen motorcycle and other items were recovered by Wayne County detectives during the investigation of the shooting, Retter said.
