4 schools compete for Business Professionals of America

Nearly 100 students from around Wayne County have qualified for 2023 state competition in topics ranging from Python programming (for computers, not snakes) to health leadership and payroll accounting.

Teens can explore careers and learn a variety of skills as they prepare for Business Professionals of America competitions.

Lincoln has the county’s most students — 55 — headed to the State Leadership Conference. Twenty-eight of those students qualified in two events, said Garrett Singer, who serves as an adviser.

In its second year, Centerville Senior High School’s BPA chapter had 26 members competing at regionals and 26 students advancing to state. CSHS’ chapter, led by former LHS adviser Bonita Klein, grew from the nine members it had last year.

Richmond High School qualified 13 students to compete at the State Leadership Conference, according to adviser Denise Selm. RHS students won eight first-place awards, and 10 students qualified to compete in two events.

Hagerstown’s Townsend Gross and Morgan Williamson also qualified for state. They received guidance from sponsors Linda Isom and Beth Overfield.

The state conference takes place March 12-14 at the Marriott in downtown Indianapolis. Those who advance to the national level will compete April 26-30 in Anaheim, California.

Each school welcomes donations to defray students’ expenses for the conferences.
