The 1A fifth-ranked Seton Catholic volleyball team began postseason play on Tuesday Oct. 15 with a sweep of Randolph Southern at the Monroe Central sectional. The high-flying Cardinals never trailed, racing to a 19-5 lead in the first set before settling for a 25-11 win. The second set was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Cardinals pulled away to a 25-15 win. The third set was tied at 1-1, with the Cards eventually winning the set 25-11, and the match 3-0.

The Rebels, who are members of the Mid-Eastern Conference, had no answer for the Cardinals’ attack. Bryn VanVleet, the state’s leader in kills, was credited with 27 kills to increase her school record career total to 1,714. Jolie Scherschel had seven kills. Bella Cornell passed out 22 assists and Taryn Tremain had 19 assists. Cornell also had 17 digs; Allison Hamilton had nine digs and Tremain had eight digs. VanVleet had three blocks.

Seton Cardinal head coach Emily Tremain said the Cardinals now control their own destiny. “It is no longer as important who is on the other side of the net,” Tremain said, “as it is about us playing to the level we are capable of playing. For the most part, we did that tonight.”

The Cardinals advanced to play Monroe Central, the sectional host, on Saturday, Oct. 19, for the right to advance to the sectional championship match.
