Richmond Police Department’s first-shift patrol officers were dispatched to the 500 block of South 10th Street on Friday after a report of a person with a gun.

While officers were responding, they were advised a person had been shot.

Tyler Qualls, 31, of Richmond was located with a gunshot wound to his left hip/buttocks area. Qualls was transported to Reid Health with a non-life threatening injury and later released, according to Capt. Curt Leverton.

Early information in the investigation indicates that people were involved in a domestic disturbance over a vehicle. During the disturbance, an altercation ensued and weapons
were involved, Leverton said.

Trevor Allen James, 22 of Richmond was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 3 felony. James was transported and lodged in the Wayne County Jail.

Leverton said investigators obtained a search warrant for a residence while processing the
scene, and recovered two guns. He also noted that witnesses are being interviewed.
