Kyle Weatherly spent 22 years with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office prior to being selected Richmond Police Department’s chief. Now, he’ll try and return as the sheriff’s department’s leader.
Weatherly posted June 3 on Facebook that he would be a Republican candidate for sheriff. The post was titled, “The job’s not finished.” Weatherly will speak about his candidacy at 5:30 p.m. June 12 at Smiley’s Pub & Beer Garden.
After winning election as Richmond mayor, Ron Oler announced Nov. 16, 2023, that Weatherly would be his police chief, beginning Jan. 1, 2024. Weatherly was leading the sheriff’s department’s detectives division at that time.
Weatherly is the second officer deciding to run for sheriff during the 2026 election cycle. Major Alan Moore, the current chief deputy for Sheriff Randy Retter, previously announced he would be a candidate.
