The Richmond Red Devil basketball team hosted the 2A fifth-ranked Centerville Bulldogs in a much-anticipated game on Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Tiernan Center.

The game was close most of the night until the Bulldogs started to separate in the fourth quarter. The teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, Richmond led by two points at halftime and Centerville led by two entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs built a lead of seven points at 59-52 and held a six-point lead at 66-60 before the Red Devils came back to extend the game to an extra period.

Key Richmond performers Eli Hubbard and Thomas Stargell, two of Richmond’s better defenders, both fouled out, but the Devils kept fighting back and eventually found a way to win.

It was a physical game with 70 free throws shot between the two teams, and free-throw accuracy was a factor in the game outcome. Centerville missed 14 of 40 attempts and Richmond missed 12 of 30 attempts. A Richmond three-pointer with 15.6 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime tied at 69-69 and gave the Red Devils new life.

Ten different Red Devils scored in the win. Treston Bennett and Jeravion Johnson-Phillips led the Richmond offense with 16 points each. Hubbard scored 14 points.

All-State candidate Shea Hollendonner was a one-man wrecking crew for Centerville, leading all game scorers with 40 points. Bryson Brown joined him in double figures with 13 points.

The win was the 200th in Red Devil head coach Josh Jurgens’ career.
