The Richmond baseball team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday, May 28, but they did not go down without a fight. Playing against heavily favored, 15th ranked Mount Vernon (Fortville) in the opening game of the Pendleton Heights sectional, the Devils fought their ranked opponent to a 0-0 tie through 10 innings before eventually losing 2-0 in 11 innings.
The pitching for both teams was exceptional. Richmond starter Zander Juday kept the Marauders off the scoreboard for 10 innings, only allowing five hits and striking out eight. Andrew Boldt for Mount Vernon matched him pitch for pitch, limiting the Red Devils to three hits and striking out 11 batters. When both starters left after 10 innings, the teams were deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
The Marauders got a two-out triple in the 11th inning from Mason Meyer, and Ben Schaeffer followed with a single to bring him home. Throwing errors allowed Shaeffer to score a second run in the inning to give Mount Vernon a 2-0 lead. Boldt was the winning pitcher. Griffin Raquet came on in relief to pick up the save. Jayvian Burdette took the loss in relief.
It was the last game in a Richmond baseball uniform for senior Aiden McWhinney.
