A new pickleball tournament organized in memory of an avid Cambridge City player will benefit a scholarship fund bearing his name.

On May 10 and 11, Golay Community Center will play host to the Randy Buhl Memorial Pickleball Tournament.

Registration is due May 6 and is available by calling 765-478-5565 or visiting Golay, 1007 E. Main St., Cambridge City.

The tournament will have five divisions: Mixed doubles, women’s and men’s singles, and women’s and men’s doubles. Players must be at least 18.

Play starts at 6 p.m. May 10 and 9 a.m. May 11.

The cost is $30 per division and $10 for each additional division. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

All proceeds will benefit the Randy Buhl Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Buhl, who played pickleball around the region and helped coach local sports in addition to his work in sales, died unexpectedly in January 2023 at age 57.

Last fall, gifts to Golay in Buhl’s memory and a $15,000 grant from Wayne County Foundation made it possible sooner than expected for the community center to resurface two rarely used, aging basketball courts next to the building into high-demand pickleball courts.

Additional donations from Golay members provided fencing between the new pickleball courts. A bench near the courts also was dedicated in Buhl’s memory.
