The Hagerstown Tiger baseball team opened Tri-Eastern Conference play on Thursday, April 10, with a 13-0 win over Union City. Originally scheduled to be played in Hagerstown, the game was moved to Union City because of field conditions. The game was most unusual. Hagerstown was patient at the plate and the Union City hurlers struggled to throw strikes.

Will Combs beat out an infield single in the first inning that turned out to be the only Tiger base hit in the game. Union City opened the season ranked fourth in the 1A state poll, but in this game the Tiger batters had little to swing at because the Indian pitchers could not find the strike zone.

Indian pitchers issued 14 walks in the game, including six straight in the fourth inning, three of which drove in runs. The next two Tiger batters were hit by pitches that drove in two more runs.

The game was halted after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Kaagen Kendall started on the mound for the Tigers, only allowing two base hits and striking out seven in four innings to earn the win. Jackson Ward pitched the fifth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced to pick up the save. Neither issued a walk.
