Orchestra offers encore for music director

While preparing for a milestone season, Richmond Symphony Orchestra’s music director signed a five-year contract renewal.

Andrés Lopera was named the RSO’s fourth music director three years ago after a yearlong search.

The orchestra has since reported average concert attendance of approximately 750 patrons. That’s about 150 more per concert than pre-pandemic levels.

Orchestra leaders say the attendance increase is significant for a community the size of Richmond and reflects an expanding roster of guest artists and community-facing experiences.

“From his first downbeat, Andrés has brought energy, high standards and a real commitment to building something meaningful with our musicians and our community,” said Marty Van Der Burgt, RSO board president, in a news release. “Over the past three years, we’ve seen measurable growth in attendance and engagement, and we’re proud to renew his contract for the next five years as we head into our 70th season.”

In recent seasons, RSO has presented 11 featured soloists, including two Grammy nominees, and strengthened relationships with sponsors, donors and patrons through special events and increased musician engagement.

“I’m honored to continue serving Richmond and making music with this orchestra,” said Lopera. “From the very beginning, we have felt the presence of this community in the hall, filling the space with an energy that inspires everything we do on stage.”

RSO musicians say they feel the momentum as well.

Matthew Gray, principal tuba, said he’s watched the orchestra grow and evolve musically, and when Lopera was hired, he knew they were going in the right direction.

“Since his appointment, I’ve noticed that the musicians feel like they belong here, that they are welcomed by the community with open arms,” Gray said.
