Shaun Francis Witte, age 77, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Forest Park Health Campus in Richmond.
Shaun was born in Birstall, England on February 23, 1946, to Francis John Witte and Frances Drake Witte. He came to the United States as a child and became a US Citizen in 1958. Shaun graduated from Richmond High School in 1965. He then joined the United States Army in 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1968. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves until 1972. An accomplished athlete, he played semi-pro baseball and was selected to attend National Baseball Placement Bureau camp. He also served as a scout for the organization. Shaun lived most of his life in Richmond and was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish and worked for Belden until his retirement in 2008.
Shaun was a passionate supporter of youth athletics and served as basketball coach at St. Mary’s Parish, Seton Catholic School and the state champion and nationally ranked AAU team, the Eastern Indiana Wolfpack. He also coached softball, baseball and volleyball for the Richmond Evening Optimist Club and was later awarded a Lifetime Membership. Shaun also served as the Optimist Club baseball program commissioner throughout his 30 years of service to the organization. He enjoyed sharing his love of sports with his four children, who each played or coached alongside him.
He is survived by children Angela (Vince Martinez) Voiles, S. Matthew Witte and Karen King; sister, Yvonne (Tim) Rudicil; grandchildren Blake (Maddison DeVivo) Voiles, Brooke (Jeremy) Rath, Benjamin (Jessica) Witte, Samantha Witte, Marissa Witte and Cameron King; great grandchildren Colby and Jay; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Francis John and Frances Witte; son, Jason Witte; and sister Bernadette Witte. The family would like to extend thanks to the numerous medical staff, friends and family who graciously helped with his care later in life.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will immediately follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
