Phyllis Ann Werking, 91, of Straughn passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at her residence. She was born August 8, 1931 in New Castle, Indiana, a daughter of the late Garlie E and Lula O. (Gulley) Smith.
Phyllis had been employed at New Castle Clinic where she worked in the billing department. She was an active member of New Lisbon Christian Church and loved her flower garden. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking and cooking, especially her noodles which she was famous for. Phyllis and her husband, Charles “Bud”, spent many winters in Florida and traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad. More than anything, she cherished the time spent with her family.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 72 years, Charles John Werking, whom she married February 3, 1951; 2 sons, Charles John (Ermalinda) Werking, II of Merritt Island, FL and Thomas (Tammy) Werking of New Castle, a daughter, Sandra (Mike) Abrams of Shirley; grandchildren: Jo Ellen Werking-Weedman, Katie (Shawn) Van Dyke, Kristin Werking (Tommy Holliday) Amy Banta, Lee (Melissa) Werking, Jameson (Natalie) Werking, Caleb Werking, Cory Werking, Jeremy (Alicia) Werking, Troy (Shanna) Broyles, Kenneth Ryan (Megan) Fairchild and Ashley (Josh) Derrickson; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Bob and Bud Smith.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 16, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Mark Lomison officiating. Burial will follow in New Lisbon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 15 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Lung Association, 55 W.
