Robert Allen Simmons, Jr., 87, of New Castle passed away September 28, 2022 at The Waters of New Castle. He was born April 24, 1935 in New Castle, Indiana, a son of the late Robert A. and Lena (Pfenninger) Simmons, Sr.
Robert (Bob) was a 1953 graduate of New Castle High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy 1953-1958, and served during the Korean War on the USS INGRAHAM. Bob had been employed with Indiana Gas for 34 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Noon Optimist Club, and an officer on the state and national level of Knights of Pythias Lodge. After retirement, Bob enjoyed fishing and always hosted several fish fries every summer. He also had a passion for camping, woodworking and making airplanes out of cans. Bob and Nancy enjoyed spending their winters in Ruskin, Florida, for 30 years. As a Veteran, in 2017 he was honored to go to Washington DC on the Indy Honor Flight with his oldest son as Guardian.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nancy (Brown) Simmons; three sons, Robert Allen III (Heidi), Timothy Van (Penny), and Nicholas Wayne (Eva); six grandchildren, Robert Allen IV (Shelby) Simmons, Tabitha (Khalid) Reichard, Amber (fiancé Quentin) Simmons, Levi (Eva Martin) Simmons, Kaden (fiancé Aliya) Simmons, and Leslie Simmons; a sister, Ruth Rodgers; sisters-in-law Jean Simmons and Carol Simmons; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, David and Stephen Simmons.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Rick Schoeff officiating.
