Herbert (Herb) G. Alcorn, 81, of Richmond, IN passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Reid Health. Herb was born in Liberty, IN on September 9, 1940. He was the son of the late Herman B. and V. Romalee Alcorn. He grew up in Union County and went on to serve as an Air Force Policeman from 1958 to 1966. He had been employed at Belden, Inc in Richmond, IN until he retired in 2001.
Herb enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed golf, playing video games, cards, crossword puzzles, mushroom hunting, flea markets, Chess, Nascar, hunting (bow and gun), and was an avid bowler for many years. In his younger years, he traveled with family and friends to every state by motorcycle. He was involved in several veteran activities and served as an honor guard. He was a member of the American Legion Post #360 and an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Herb leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Shelly Alcorn of Richmond, IN, daughter Pam (Alcorn) Redd, Liberty, IN, son, Jeff (Debbie) Anderson, Auburn, CA., former wife, Sue Alcorn, Liberty, mother-in-law Shirley Smith, Palm City, Florida, brother-in-law, Les (Barbara) Smith, Palm City, Florida, Alan Smith, Richmond, IN., sister-in-law Brenda (Michael) Jordan, Richmond, IN, Janas (Ed) Durkee, Orlando, Florida, and Sue Alcorn, Liberty. Herb had three grandsons Derek Hill (Crystal), Ryan Anderson, Shane Anderson, and a great-granddaughter, Brynlee Rayne Hill. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, and special nieces Tylyn Jackson, Trinity Close, Ashley Jackson, Courtney Smith, Angelia Smith, Kristi Cones, and Danielle Green. Special nephews Aaron Close, Hunter Wells, Logan Smith, Shelby Durkee, Jarod Jordan, and special great-nieces Madelynn and Alizah Pipenger, His special four-footed friends, Sparky and Lady must also be included.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Romalee Alcorn, brothers, Herman Jr., Kenneth, James, and Larry Alcorn; a sister, Phyllis Jean; a niece, Brandy Newton, his father-in-law, Shelby Smith, son-in-law Lowell Redd, and grandsons Dylan and Daniel Hill.
Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home, Richmond, IN has been entrusted with arrangements. To honor Herb’s wishes, there will be no public calling. Pastor Martin Holman of Hillcrest Baptist Church will officiate a private graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Herb will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Cemetery following the veteran’s honorary ceremony.
