Maurita L. Ball, age 86, of Richmond, Indiana, died Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at The Springs of Richmond.

Born July 13, 1935, in Milroy, Indiana, to Russell and Flo Hayes Harcourt, Maurita lived most of her life in Richmond. She graduated from Milroy High School in Rush County and earned a bachelor’s degree in education and English from Indiana University, where she was a Mortar Board Honoree. Maurita taught 5th and 6th grades and led the school choir at Charles Elementary School in Richmond.

Maurita was a member of First Presbyterian Church and formerly of Reid Presbyterian Church, where she shared her beautiful voice in the choirs, taught Sunday school, and served as a Deacon and on the Session committee. Maurita served as an Altrusa Club board member and belonged to the IU East Community Choir, Aftermath Book Club, Teacher’s Sorority, Kappa Delta Women’s Sorority, and IU Foundation. She was president of the Charles Elementary PTO and Dental Auxiliary and board member of the Richmond Symphony Women’s Association and DAR, having served as DAR Chapter Regent. Maurita participated in Richmond Civic Theatre productions. She enjoyed gardening, music, reading, spending time with family and friends, and visiting the family farm. Maurita would light up the room with her enthusiasm and love of life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Maria Ball of Richmond and Selby (Al) Mirilavassani of Cupertino, California; sister and best friend, Marilyn Woods of Brownsburg, Indiana; grandchildren, Roya and Kamron Mirilavassani of Cupertino, California; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Robert D. Ball, DDS, who died July 15, 2005; mother, Flo Harcourt; father, Russell Harcourt; sister, Betty Spyrison; brother, Russell Harcourt Jr.; and niece, Sharalie Harcourt.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Maurita L. Ball at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021, with a calling from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 100 North 10th Street, Richmond. Please wear masks and practice social distancing. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
