John M. Sayre, III died at Reid Hospital on November 25, 2021, surrounded by his family.
John M. Sayre III was born Dec. 23, 1940 in Rensselaer, IN to Rev. John M. Sayre II and Marjorie P. Sayre. John was a member of the New Haven High School Class of 1958, and married Sally Sue Hamilton of New Haven on January 28, 1961 John graduated from DePauw University in 1962 and continued his education at the IU School of Law, graduating in 1965. From 1965 to 1968 John was a member of the USAF Judge Advocate General’s Corps, attaining the rank of captain. Upon discharge from the USAF, John and his family moved to Richmond, In, joining the law firm of Harrington, Maley, and Gardner
John was always active in his community. He was an involved participant of the Indiana Bar Association and served on the Indiana Probate Review Committee. He was past president of Wayne County Bar Association and of the Eastern Indiana Estate Plan Council. He was a supporter in the Animal Welfare League and a long time board member of Hayes Arboretum. John spearheaded the commercial development of the Arboretum Property along US Highway 40.
John was an avid sportsman who enjoyed quail hunting, field trialing, fishing, and horseback riding. He was also a passionate sports fan, holding season tickets to IU basketball games from the first year that Assembly Hall was open.
Survivors include his children, Elizabeth D. Sayre, Debora K. Sayre, and Gordon D. Harmon Sayre, brother Lt. Col. Larry E Sayre, and his wife Nancy, niece Jocelyn Atteberry, and grandchildren Ashley and Eric Morledge-Sayre.
The family is grateful for the expert care given by Dr. Sairah Ahmed at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX for John’s treatment of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during the past 3 years.
A private service will be held at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary.
