Dr. Gordon Paul Miller, age 73, of Richmond, Indiana, died Saturday, November 20, 2021, at his home surrounded by family after a nine-month battle with cancer.

Born May 13, 1948, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Douglas and Jeanne Marie Laub Miller, Gordon graduated from Earlham College in 1970 and received his Master of Science degree in behavioral genetics from the University of Connecticut in 1973. He was accepted at the Indiana University School of Medicine and graduated in 1978, after serving a three-month externship in Kenya funded by MAP International. Gordon also attended the Earlham School of Religion.

He was a physician at the Richmond State Hospital from 1979 – 2011, having served as Chief of Staff for 11 of those years. From 2001 until February 2021, Gordon was the Medical Director of the Richmond Treatment Center, primarily assisting thousands of people with addictions to find balance in their lives. From 1984 – 2004, he worked at Med Surg Plus and enjoyed his time there.

Gordon was an active member of the Yokefellow Ministry of Daily Living, started by his mentor, D. Elton Trueblood; a supporter of the Whitewater Valley Land Trust; and MAP International, providing medicine and health supplies to those in need. His hobbies included photography, remodeling the family home, genealogy, “tractor therapy”, pond digging, planting trees, and extensive journaling. He loved to travel, especially to Africa, Europe, Ireland, Florida, and Vermont. Gordon was a patron of the arts, supporting the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, and locally.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Gail Godsey Miller; daughters, Mariah (Armando Ayala) Miller of Santa Barbara, California, Erin (Jeremy) Faatz of Midland, Georgia, and Rebekah Miller (Salman) Afsari of Kenmore, Washington; five beloved grandchildren, Amalia, Remington, Tilia, Rosealee, and Gael; father, Douglas J. Miller of Richmond; brother, Allen L. (Linda) Miller of Wauseon, Ohio; eight nieces, three nephews, cousins, and their families; and many friends and work colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

The family wants to express gratitude for the care given to Gordon by the staffs of IU Health Methodist Hospital, Reid Health, Omnicare Home Health, Arbor Trace, Golden LivingCenter, and Reid Health Hospice.

Visitation for Dr. Gordon Paul Miller, will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021, at First Friends Meeting, 2010 Chester Boulevard, Richmond with Alan Kolp officiating. The family requests that masks be worn.
