Doris Jean Hardgrove, 85, of New Castle passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle. She was born November 16, 1935 in New Castle, Indiana, a daughter of the late Ronald and Mary (Tutterow) Webb.

A 1953 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, she was involved in Phi Beta Psi, Future Business Leaders of America, cheer block and the Phoenix High School paper staff. After High School she attended IU East and studied psychology. She retired from New Castle State Developmental Center in New Castle where she served from 1963 – 1996. Doris enjoyed bowling, was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Women’s Golf League at the Crest View Golf Club and Maplewood golf league. Her first year playing she won the most improved golfer at Crest View. Doris was the best putter in the family. She was a huge Elvis Presley fan and fond of Robert Redford movies. She enjoyed traveling to various states to attend golf outings with her husband and family. She loved attending activities and playing cards at the Senior Center.

Doris loved her Colts, Pacers, Chicago Cubs and New Castle Trojans. She enjoyed celebrating birthdays and holidays with the family and the family loved her M & M cookies. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Pamela (Tony) Abshire of New Castle, Rick Pierce of New Castle and Larry (Dona) Pierce of Dayton, Ohio; step daughter, Sherry (Jimmy) Cotner of Mooreland; 12 grandchildren, and several great and great -great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Hardgrove; son, Robert Michael Pierce, Sr.; grandson, Mike Pierce, Jr.; step son, Jerry Allen Hardgrove, Jr. and several aunts & uncles.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital P.O. Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
