Dr. Donald E. Jennings DDS, 92, Muncie, passed away Friday morning, December 4, 2020, at his home. He was born on Tuesday, August 7, 1928, in Randolph County, the son of James Preston “J.P.” and Ruth (Thurston) Jennings. Donald graduated from Lynn High School in 1946. After graduating from Lynn, Donald attended Earlham College for one year. In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served in Germany in the hospital dental clinic. In 1953, he married Phyllis Dunn, and moved to Evansville College for two years on a pre-dental program. He was then accepted into dental school at Indiana University, Bloomington, which was the last year for freshmen students to be able to attend classes there. Donald graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry and moved to Muncie to establish his dental practice in 1959. He also opened a satellite office in Sulphur Springs in the fall of 1980. He practiced dentistry for forty-seven years before retiring December 15, 2006. Dr. Jennings was an avid poet, enjoyed staying active, and water skied up into his seventies. He was a member of the American Dental Association, served on the National Board of Dental Entrance Exams, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Muncie. Survivors include three children, Sally (husband, David) Murphy, Mooresville, Indiana, Jill (husband, Jeff) Gray, Noblesville, Indiana, and Tom Jennings, Muncie; four grandchildren, Holly (husband, Justin) Thieneman, Nashville, Tennessee, Amber (husband, Jeremy) Lee, Fishers, Indiana, Corbin Murphy, Mooresville, Indiana, and Carly (husband, Eric) Jay, Fishers, Indiana; eight great-grandchildren, Hunter Murphy, Payton Murphy, Caleb Lee, Nolan Lee, Kinsington Thieneman, Adelaide Thieneman, Grayson Jay, and Madison Thieneman; one sister, Roselyn Lewis, Russiaville, Indiana; long time care giver, Donna Fierce; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Dunn) Jennings; his parents, James Preston and Ruth Irene Jennings; and one brother, Douglas R. Jennings. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2020, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304 with Pastor Wade Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Memorial Park with Military Rites conducted by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
