Shirley Hunter, 83, of Connersville, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Reid Health in Richmond.
She was born on April 19, 1936, in Greensfork, Indiana, and is the daughter of Carl and Louise Simpson.
She married Everett “Gene” Hunter on April 27, 1957, in Connersville at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
Shirley retired after 29 years from Cox’s. She started in the gift center and worked her way up from cashier to the office manager.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, helped in the daycare, volunteered with visiting shut-ins, and made sunshine baskets.
Shirley liked to spend her time reading, studying her bible, and listening to music. She also enjoyed sewing and working with other different crafts. She had volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader. She loved being with her family and traveling to new places. She cherished her vacations in Branson.
Along with her husband of 62 years, she is survived by a daughter, Jeanna (Mike) Mitchell, of Richmond; two sons, Tom (Sue) McHugh, of Crown Point, and Marty (Kim) Hunter, of Alquina; three grandchildren, Chad (Carolyn) Mitchell, Brandy (Shawn) Washler, and Libby (Michael) Alvarado; six great-grandchildren, Parker, Savannah, Dakota, Carson, Andrew, and Cole; as well as her beloved granddog, Reggie. She also leaves behind two best friends, Mary Hall and Betty Seaver.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Polly Tarplee and Barbara Horr; two brothers, Bob Simpson and Jim Simpson, an infant daughter, Vicki Jean, and her friend, Marie Hightower.
Visitation for Shirley will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Connersville. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 10, with Pastor Kim McHale and Pastor John Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Dale Cemetery.
