Waneta LaMar Selke passed away January 30, 2018. She was born July 9, 1917 in Hagerstown, Indiana.
Waneta had three brothers, and was raised by her grandmother following the death of her mother when her mother was just three years of age. She graduated from New Castle high school during which time she lived with and worked for various families in town. A few years later she met the love of her life, Roland. They were blessed to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary one week before Roland’s death at age 98.
Waneta had many interests and talents. She was a gifted, self taught artist who began painting and winning awards for her oil paintings and watercolors when she was in her 50’s. She enjoyed collecting, researching, and restoring antiques, reading biographies, playing bridge and traveling. She was a member of PSI IOTA XI, PEO, Agenda Literary Club and First Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir as a teenager, was married and became a 75 year member.
Waneta’s family included her two daughters, Diane (David) Robbin and Susan (Bill) Nuss; grandchildren, Scott Starbuck, Margot Hausmann, Jeff Lantz, and Jennifer Moyers; and great grandchildren, Teague, Ethan, Zoe, Rollie, Abhi, Evan, Mason, Eli, Cash, Eliana and Katriel. The family is grateful to Jennifer Moyers for providing such loving care and personal attention for Waneta.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in New Castle. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Home of New Castle. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, St. Vincent Hospice or Marquette Senior Living Employee Appreciation Fund.
