Horace N. Smith, 92, Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Henry. He was born Dec. 5, 1925 on White Leghorn Farms outside Hagerstown, the son of Omer and Myrtle Smith.
He married Vera C. Dilling in Pendleton on Nov. 9, 1945 and they lived in the same house on the farm until moving to Addison Place in New Castle in 2016.
Horace was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He farmed, repaired two-way business radios in his business Smith Communications and served as a broadcast engineer at radio stations WERK, WMDH, WHON/WQLK, WIFE and WZZY. For many years he had a gospel music show, Sunday Vespers, on radio stations in Richmond and New Castle.
Horace was member of West River Friends Church, Hagerstown Optimist Club and Indiana Farm Bureau. He was long-time ham radio operator, W9PPD, and was a member of amateur radio clubs in Richmond and New Castle. He was a past member of the Hagerstown Flying Club and served on the Nettle Creek School Board during the time of consolidation.
He was past clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends, served on the board of trustees for White’s Residence and Family Services in Wabash for more than 30 years and was clerk of the Associated Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs for many years.
Horace is survived by his wife of 72 years Vera; four sons, Max and Anne Smith of Hagerstown, Larry and Donna Smith of LaPorte, Ind., Darrell of Hagerstown and Steve and Kathy Smith of Elwood; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Logan; three sisters, Martha Shelley, Hazel Lamott and Jane Baker; and a great-grandson, Landon Dunham.
Visitation will be 1 to 5 PM on Saturday, March 31, at West River Friends Church, 10636 Lacy Road, Economy. Services will follow at 5 PM, with Pastors David Brock and Ben Snyder officiating.
