William J. Mathews passed away at his residence surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 28, 2017.
He was born on June 23, 1937 to Russell and Ada Louise (Lamb) Helmsing in Richmond, Indiana.
William was a graduate of Centerville High School. Following graduation, he enlisted and was honorably discharged from the United States Army and Army National Guard in 1963. His duties included being a Specialist Four E-4 Company B 1st BG 151st Infantry.
William was a jolly man who led a lot of people to the Lord. His smile was contagious. He was an avid Young & Restless fan; and a Chairman of Deacon for over 30 years. William worked over 30 years as a Tool & Die maker for NATCO (1963-1990) and Amcast (1990-2001) factories before their closing. He enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 ½ years: Stella Mae Mathews; daughter: Angela Lynch and her son Landon Lynch; son: William Jason Mathews and his children: Patoran Mathews, Whitney Mathews and Kaitlyn Rose Johnson; four brothers: Stewart (Fran) Mathews, Mitchell (Keri) Mathews, David (Kip) Gordon and Jerry Gordon; two sisters: Betty (Bob) Breedon and Susie Mathews; nieces; nephews, and many friends including special friends: Pastor Danny and Mavis Cross and Aleana Hendrix.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a son-in-law: SSG Gregory Lynch.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Galilean Baptist Church, 204 South Morton Street, Centerville, Indiana, with Pastor Danny Cross officiating.
Family and friends called or visited at the church Sunday from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Military honors were provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Dinner followed at the Church.
