CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Mary J. Chappell, age 93, of Centerville, Indiana, died Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Ambassador Healthcare.
Born September 25, 1923, in Corbin, Kentucky, to Aaron and Nancy Gregory Walters, Mary had lived in this community from 1950 –1968, before moving to Michigan City, Indiana. She had recently returned to this area.
Mary was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #49 and received her 50 year pin in 2013. She loved to cook, sew, and garden.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice (Garrett) Roberts of Centerville, Indiana; son, Raymond (Delores) Chappell of Michigan City, Indiana; grandchildren, Mary Louise (Norman) Scherer, John (Juli) Chappell, Nancy (Bill) Harvey, and Garrett Roberts II; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Harvey, Justin Allison, Gabrielle Chappell, Zakary Chappell, Theresa Scherer, and Samantha Chappell; great-great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Harville of Florida; brother-in-law, Clyde Chappell; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Lester Chappell; parents; sisters, Dorothy Centers, Mae McVae, Katherine Hogan, and Flossie North; and brothers, Oscar, Herman, Ambrose, and Leslie Walters.
Visitation for Mary J. Chappell will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, Centerville. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Chalk officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
