DUBLIN – Edna “Granny” Gabbard, 93, passed away Monday evening November 14, 2016 at Henry County Hospital in New Castle.
The daughter of the late Curt and Martha (Fox) Lakes, Edna was born in Jackson County, Kentucky on June 1, 1923.
She moved from Kentucky to Cambridge City, Indiana in 1941 and has made her home in Dublin since 1952. Granny was a homemaker and will be missed dearly by her children and grandchildren. She had worked at Ralph’s Chuckwagon in Dublin and retired in 1983 from A.R.A. for whom she had been employed at the cafeteria in the Connersville Visteon plant. Edna was a member of the Do-Gooders Club and was the oldest living original members of “her church”- the First Missionary Baptist Church, Dublin. In her leisure, Edna enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.
Survivors include 4 children, Betty (Lloyd) Walker, Jack (Joan) Gabbard, Gene (Susie) Gabbard and Jeff (Jackie) Gabbard all of Dublin; 18 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 12 great -great grandchildren; 3 sisters- Berniece Gibson of Hamilton, OH, Shirley Hobbs of McKee, KY and Carol Brewer of Sharpsburg, KY; 5 brothers, Junior, Elmer, Conal, Eugene and Billy Lakes all of McKee, KY; nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Lawrence Gabbard. They were married in New Castle, Indiana on May 8, 1943. 3 children, Della Powell, Lawrence Gabbard Jr. and James “Jimmy” Gabbard; step mother, Elizabeth McCowan Lakes; 10 brothers, Raymond, Aaron, Dennis, Ralph, Donnie, Garnet, Dale, Delver, Clyde and Dwight Lakes; 6 sisters, Esther McCowan, Gladys Sparks, Jewell Gabbard, Ruby DeBruler, Clementine and Florence Lakes.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 2 p.m. on Saturday November 19, 2016 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Jim Noggle will officiate. Burial will follow at the South Lawn Cemetery in Dublin.
