A longtime leader in Richmond nonprofits has started working as the new executive director of Richmond High School Alumni Association. 

Rachel Hughes’ new role began Dec. 1. 

In a news release, Hughes said she’s honored to begin this new phase of her career with RHSAA.

“With a deep appreciation for education and lifelong learning, I look forward to supporting efforts that keep Richmond High School alumni connected to the school and to each other.” 

Hughes, a southwestern Indiana native, came to Richmond more than 30 years ago. She is married to 1972 RHS graduate Ron Hughes. They formerly owned Tin Lizzie Cafe and Tin Cup Tea Shop in downtown Richmond. She has four children and six grandchildren, including four attending Richmond Community schools. 

Hughes earned a master’s degree in philanthropic studies from Indiana University. She also has earned certificates in fundraising management from IU’s Lilly School of Philanthropy and nonprofit executive leadership from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Her bachelor’s degree was in speech, communication and theater from Indiana State. 

Hughes has volunteered for organizations including Kiwanis, Junior Achievement, Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce and Richmond Civic Theatre. 

Her duties will include coordinating RHS graduates’ scholarship applications and awards for Wayne County colleges, writing the newsletter, providing support for class reunions, updating the alumni database and raising funds.
