Inspectors discovered six critical and 24 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.

The violations included non-working lights, unsanitary employee practices and the presence of dirt, mold, and food debris in food and bar areas. 

Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between Nov. 25-Dec. 6, 2024.

Critical Violations

  • Dec. 6: Great Wall, 1731 National Road W., Richmond. One critical: Employee’s open beverage container observed in the food preparation area. To be corrected that day.
  • Dec. 5: Tiffin Indian and American Restaurant & Bar, 1480 IN-1, Cambridge City. Four critical: Raw chicken thawing in standing water with internal temperature of 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Voluntarily discarded. Food residue/debris on manual can opener’s cutting-surface blade. To be corrected that day. Onion gravy at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Voluntarily discarded. Day-old curry sauce at 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Voluntarily discarded. Day-old chicken, chickpeas, cooked blackened chickpeas and goat not date-marked. Voluntarily discarded. Eight noncritical: Ingredients on dried fruit laddu label not listed in order of prominence. To be corrected that day. Unlabeled flour and sugar bins. To be corrected that day. Microwave food residue. To be corrected that day. No ambient air thermometer on Starbucks cooler. To be corrected by Dec. 12. No ambient air thermometer on the cooler near the grill.   • Nov. 26: Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill, 4425 National Road E., Richmond. One critical: No Certified Food Handler on staff at time of inspection. To be corrected by Jan. 1, 2025. Three noncritical: Lights above the grill not working. To be corrected by Dec. 6. Dirty air vent near walk-in cooler. To be corrected by Dec. 6. Molding and wall behind dish machine needs repair. To be corrected by Jan. 26, 2025.  

Noncritical Violations

  • Dec. 6: Lumpy’s Cafe, 20 S. Foote St., Cambridge City. Three noncritical: Covered receptacle needed for sanitary napkins in employee restroom. To be corrected by Dec. 7. Dust and debris on lighting vents and grill hood. To be corrected by Dec. 20. Floors, ceilings and walls require cleaning. To be corrected by Dec. 20. 
  • Dec. 3: Chili’s Grill & Bar, 4383 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical: Employees without hair restraint during food preparation. To be corrected that day.
  • Dec. 3: Smiley’s Pub, 39 N. Eighth St., Richmond. One noncritical: Dirty microwave and reach-in cooler doors. To be corrected that day.
  • Dec. 2: El Bronco, 2515 Chester Blvd., Richmond. One noncritical: Broken soap dispensers at prep area and bar. To be corrected that day.
  • Dec. 2: Fountain Acres Foods, 1140 W. Whitewater Road, Fountain City. One noncritical: Dirty wall and ceiling in oven room. To be corrected by Dec. 12.
  • Dec. 2: Generations Grill and Sports Bar, 1500 N. E St., Richmond. Two noncritical: Lights above dish washing area not working. To be corrected by Dec. 12. Dirty ice machine. To be corrected that day.
  • Nov. 25: 70 Quick Stop, 5801 National Road E., Richmond. Three noncritical: Dirty microwave oven; Mold-like substance on soda nozzles; mold-like substance near ice machine lid. All to be corrected by Nov. 26. 
  • Nov. 25: Village Mart, 500 W. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical: No paper towels at hand washing station. To be corrected that day.

Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
