A Cambridge City race car driver says he will cherish a brief conversation with a former NASCAR driver one week before the legend’s tragic death.

Presley Sorah, an ARCA Menards Series/NASCAR regional competitor, spoke with Greg Biffle on Dec. 11 at the Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis.

They quickly posed for a photo, and Biffle wished Sorah luck in his next race. They bonded over their common interest in motorsports and NASCAR specifically.

That interaction was one week before Biffle’s jet crashed at the Statesville (North Carolina) Regional Airport. Biffle and his wife and two children were among the seven people on board who died.

After learning about the aviation incident, Sorah called Dec. 18 “a horrible day” because of the “unbelievable tragedy.”

“It was nice to talk to him about what I do last week, and I’ll always cherish having that conversation,” Sorah told WWN.

While Sorah didn’t know Biffle personally, he said the stock car series Hall of Fame nominee “seemed like a great human being that put others first while living his own life to the fullest extent.”

Despite his many racing accolades, according to The Associated Press, Biffle might be best remembered for his humanitarian work, such as volunteering as a helicopter pilot to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene in 2024.

NASCAR chose Biffle as one of its top 75 drivers in history, AP said, noting Biffle drove for 18 years at the top of the sport.

Racing Toward a Dream’

The sad news about Biffle developed the day before Sorah was to participate in a book launch party at Golay Community Center.

The Dec. 19 and 20 book parties at Golay and Kids at Heart Publishing celebrated Sorah’s new children’s book, “Racing Toward a Dream.”

Sorah said he wrote the full-color, 28-page book to give kids motivation to follow their dreams and show them that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.

Sorah, a 2022 Lincoln High School graduate, is a paraprofessional at Western Wayne Elementary School and a counselor in Golay’s summer youth program. Copies of the book are being donated to every preschool through second grade classroom at Western Wayne Elementary plus one for Cambridge City Public Library.

Sorah worked with Golay to have its summer day camp participants illustrate all of the pictures inside the book.
