As America’s 250th birthday continues, Fountain City will incorporate the national milestone into its annual festival. “Celebrating Freedom” is the theme for the 59th Levi Coffin Days Festival set for Sept. 19-20, honoring both America’s history and spirit of Fountain City.
Fountain City Lions Club has organized the festival since 1977. This year, the club partnered with Fountain City Forward to form the Levi Coffin Days Entertainment Committee. This group will plan and organize the entertainment and parade.
Levi Coffin Days was founded in 1968 to honor the legacy of Levi and Catharine Coffin and establish the fund to restore the historic Fountain City home that served as a key station on the Underground Railroad, now a state historic site that will be open during the festival. The community event has grown into one of Wayne County’s longest-running traditions, turning the September weekend into an excursion for entertainment, local food, shopping and family activities.
“Celebrating Freedom is a meaningful theme for Fountain City,” said Beth Bond, chair of the Levi Coffin Days entertainment committee. “As our nation marks its 250th birthday, we also have the opportunity to honor Levi Coffin’s legacy and the role our community played in the Underground Railroad. Levi Coffin Days has always been a community celebration, and we hope this year’s festival inspires more people to become part of that tradition—as participants, volunteers, sponsors and visitors.”
Organizers invite the whole community to get involved, as a vendor, sponsor or parade participant. All applications and registration forms are available at LeviCoffinDays.org. Sponsorships for the overall festival are through the Fountain City Lions Club; parade and entertainment sponsorships through Fountain City Forward.
