Theater staff say the timeless yet relevant musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1987, is focused on four characters. A baker and his wife wish to have a child; Cinderella wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack wishes his cow would give milk.

When the baker and his wife learn that they can’t have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two travel to break that curse. Although everyone’s wish is granted, their actions’ consequences haunt them later.

Theater staff say the 1988 Tony Award-winning musical score and book by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine are both enchanting and touching.

Jaclyn Bartlemay serves as director and Jarrod Davis is music director for the live orchestra. Dozens of volunteers are part of the production, including some Richmond High School engineering students who’ve helped with props.
