Inspectors discovered 11 critical and 18 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.
The violations include the presence of rodents, unsanitary employee practices, dirty equipment, equipment requiring repair and improper food temperatures.
Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.
Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between March 10-21.
Critical Violations
- March 19: Way2Go Mart, 1240 N.W. Fifth St., Richmond. Two critical: Two open employee beverages observed in the food preparation area. Corrected during inspection. No certified food manager on staff. To be corrected by April 29.
- March 18: Arby’s West, 215 National Road W., Richmond. One critical: Rodent droppings under soda station at drive-thru. To be corrected by April 4.
- March 14: El Mezcal Grill, 408 E. Main St., Cambridge City. One critical: Metal pan with raw beef strips observed at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Voluntarily discarded at time of inspection. Metal pans with the following: raw chicken strips observed at 45 degrees Fahrenheit; raw chicken breasts observed at 48 degrees Fahrenheit; raw shrimp observed at 48 degrees Fahrenheit. All three items to be corrected by April 14. Two noncritical: Food residue and debris on manual can opener. Corrected during inspection. No thermometer in reach-in cooler near prep station; no thermometer in refrigerator near grill. Both to be corrected by April 14.
- March 12: Highland Lake Golf Course, 1972 Highland Drive, Richmond. One critical: No date marks on refrigerated food. Corrected during inspection. Three noncritical: No hand soap at hand sink. Corrected during inspection. Dirty fan guard in soda (Coke) cooler. To be corrected by March 22. No test strips at time of inspection. To be corrected by March 22.
- March 12: Hissho Sushi at Meijer, 2507 Chester Blvd., Richmond. One critical: Employee did not wash hands before putting on clean gloves to touch ready-to-eat food. Corrected during inspection.
- March 11: Golden Corral, 3625 National Road E., Richmond. Two critical: Containers of raw chicken thigh strips were stored over ready-to-eat hamburger toppings (onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and condiment packages) at Fresh Catch reach-in cooler. Corrected during inspection. Back siphonage device not attached to spigot at spray hose (under pressure) at fryer hand sink area. To be corrected by March 21. One noncritical: Floors under fryers are no longer smooth and easily cleanable. To be corrected by May 5.
- March 10: Elks Country Club, 2100 U.S. 27, Richmond. Three critical: Utensils at grill are heavily soiled and have not been washed-rinsed-sanitized since previous day’s use. Corrected during inspection. Wash basin three-bay sink is disconnected from plumbing system and requires repair. To be corrected by March 20. Tiki torch fluid container stored on a food prep table instead of in a chemical storage area. Corrected during inspection.
Noncritical Violations
- March 21: Circle U Help Center, 19 N. 13th St., Richmond. One noncritical: Kitchen reach-in cooler interior is soiled. To be corrected by March 31.
- March 18: By Hand and Fork, 1400 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: Sanitizer test strips require replacement. To be corrected by March 28.
- March 14: Main Street Quick Pix, 2 E. Main St., Cambridge City. Two noncritical: No thermometer for hot holding at pizza station. Hot holding station requires repair. Both to be corrected by March 21.
- March 13: Applebee’s, 4425 National Road E., Richmond. Three noncritical: Hood vent over grill requires cleaning. To be corrected by March 23. Molding and wall behind dish machine require repair. To be corrected by April 23. Dirty floors throughout kitchen. Corrected during inspection.
- March 11: Lucky Three Food Mart LLC, 1605 E. Main Street, Richmond. Three noncritical: Soda cans stored in ice water. Corrected during inspection. Four packages of prepackaged food and drinks in plastic bottles stored directly on the floor rather than 6” above the floor. Eight boxes of single-service items stored directly on the floor rather than 6” above the floor. Both items to be corrected by March 21.
- March 10: Wendy’s North, 2724 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Two noncritical: Sanitizer test kit not provided. Dirty ceiling vents. Both to be corrected by March 20.

Inspections
Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
