A WNBA champion and four-time Olympic gold medalist will share an inspirational message at Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County’s annual Smart Futures Dinner.
Tamika Catchings has agreed to be the guest speaker for the Oct. 10 fundraiser.
Catchings, a University of Tennessee graduate, was the third pick in the 2001 WNBA draft. She retired from the Indiana Fever after 16 seasons in professional basketball. At that time, she was the league’s No. 2 scorer and rebounder, career leader in free throws and steals, and five-time Defensive Player of the Year. Those accomplishments came while living with a severe hearing impairment.
In addition to being an author and public speaker, Catchings owns Tea’s Me Cafe locations in Indianapolis. Proceeds from her bottled teas sold at some Indianapolis-area Meijer stores benefit the Catch The Stars youth organization that Catchings and her sister run. It focuses on fitness, literacy and youth empowerment.
Richmond High School Principal Rae Ferriell-Woolpy, whose previous roles at the school include athletic director, teacher and coach, is being recognized at the dinner for her years of helping local youth.
The club says the Oct. 10 event celebrates exceptional people who have inspired others.
Smart Futures will take place at Wayne County Fairgrounds’ First Bank Expo Center. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
It is not a formal occasion. Dress is smart casual, such as khaki pants.
Tickets are $75 per person or $550 for a table of eight. They are available at SmartFutures2024.eventbrite.com while supplies last or by Oct. 3. Attendees can also add onto their tickets with a VIP Meet & Greet for $250 per pair.
