During his visit to Cambridge City regarding flood relief efforts, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said a Blackhawk helicopter would be on call in east central Indiana for any search, rescue or recovery efforts with additional rain in the forecast.
That same day, Thursday, Aug. 13, a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter assigned to the Indiana National Guard’s Medivac Unit out of Gary was involved in a mishap during ground taxi operations at Connersville Municipal Airport (Mettel Field). Lauren Houck, chief communications officer for Indiana National Guard, confirmed that information for WWN.
A photo viewed by WWN showed the aircraft in contact with an airport structure displaying a large “flammable” sign.
Houck said all personnel are safe and accounted for, and no one was injured.
Damage to the aircraft is being assessed as part of a review by the Indiana National Guard’s Aviation Safety Office, which is standard procedure following any aviation event, Houck said.
