Two local sources of assistance are available to help connect donors with Wayne County kids who could use some joy at the holidays.
Western Wayne families who could use some help providing gifts for their children or young teens are encouraged to apply for Golay Community Center’s Angel Tree.
Applications are being collected through Nov. 25, with no late applications accepted. Registration takes place from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays at the center, 1007 E. Main St., Cambridge City.
Families with children ages 0 to 14 are eligible. Children must live in Western Wayne County or attend Western Wayne Schools to receive gifts.
Applicants must bring a copy of their 2018 tax return, a driver’s license for the applicant, Social Security cards for all members of the household, a utility bill within the last 30 days to verify address, and birth certificates for all children being considered for the tree.
Golay staff note the Angel Tree is a supplement to the child’s family Christmas, and there’s no set amount a sponsor is to spend. Promotional materials note “It is a generous donation from one individual to your child or children.”
Individuals, businesses or organizations are invited to come into Golay until Dec. 1 to choose their angel(s) and fill out a sponsorship form at the reception desk. Sponsors are to turn in their angel gifts by Dec. 6. Gifts will be distributed Dec. 11-12.

Another option for holiday help for families throughout Wayne County is the annual Toys for Tots giveaway.
Pre-registration takes place from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 2 and 1-4 p.m. Dec. 8 at Whitewater Valley Marine Corps League, 200 S. Ninth St., Richmond.
The program is open to custodial parents or legal guardians, who must bring several items to register their child(ren) for the program, including two forms of ID showing current address, and one must be a photo ID. They also need a birth certificate and Social Security card for the child(ren). Guardians must bring proof of guardianship.
Children are not to attend the registration session. For more information, call (219) 814-2880.
