Inspectors discovered five critical and 24 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local establishments.

For instance, employees were found without hair restraints, and dirty areas were noted. 

Wayne County Health Department employees collected those concerns between July 17-Aug. 10. 

Establishments are to post their most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Critical violations

  • July 31: Fountain City Food Mart, 402 U.S. 27 S. Fountain City. Two criticals and three noncriticals. Criticals: Temperatures of food in reach-in cooler were above 50 degrees. Discarded. Sanitizer bottle wasn’t labeled. To be corrected that day. Noncriticals: Cookies marked for sale lacked ingredients label. Paper towel dispenser wasn’t working and there was no soap at hand washing sink. All were to be corrected that day. FOLLOW-UP VISIT: Aug. 1, cooler had been discarded. 
  • July 29: Parlor Donuts, 533 National Road W., Richmond. One critical and one noncritical. Critical: Ice scoop at front counter was stored with the handle in contact with ice used for customer beverages. Noncritical: Employee preparing food didn’t have hair effectively restrained. Both corrected.
  • July 24: Richmond 50 Inc., 501 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One critical: No hot water during inspection. Stop serving coffee until resolved. To be corrected by Aug. 4.
  • July 17: Naomi’s, 15557 Goose Heaven Road, Cambridge City. One critical and one non-critical. Critical: “Coffee base” prepared at home is being used for iced coffee. Items prepared at home are not approved. Noncritical: Ice cream scoop is stored in standing water. Both to be corrected that day. 

Noncritical violations

  • Aug. 8: McDonald’s, 3126 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: Employee worked with exposed food without hair restraint. Corrected during inspection. 
  • Aug. 7: The Eatery, 406 U.S. 27 S., Fountain City. One noncritical: Ceiling inside walk-in cooler was dirty. To be corrected by Aug. 17.
  • July 31: Richmond Beverage Solutions, 1590 N.W. 11th St., Richmond. One noncritical: No thermometer in reach-in sandwich cooler. To be corrected by Aug. 1.
  • July 31: 1201 Smart, 1201 N. E St., Richmond. Four noncriticals: Mold-like substances on lid inside ice machine and on soda nozzles. Both to be corrected that day. Gap at the west outside door. No test kit. Both to be corrected in seven days. FOLLOW-UPS: Aug. 1 visit: Two noncriticals found. Mold-like substances remained. To be corrected by Aug. 2. Aug 2 visit: Mold-like substances had been corrected. Aug. 7: Two noncriticals remained: Gap at west outside door. No test kit. Both to be corrected by Aug. 14. 
  • July 30: The Coney Island, 750 S. Seventh St., Richmond. Two noncriticals: Lights in walk-in cooler weren’t working. To be corrected by Aug. 10. Employee’s hair wasn’t properly restrained. To be corrected that day. 
  • July 30: Just 1 More Bar & Grill, 743 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One noncritical: Correct test kit wasn’t available at time of inspection. To be corrected in seven days. 
  • July 26: El Amigo Mexican Food, 1520 N. A St., Richmond. Two noncriticals: Hood system and lights were dirty. Drain on outside was leaking and needed repair. Both to be corrected by Aug. 6. 
  • July 24: Lucky Three Food Mart LLC, 1605 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical: Boxes of single-service food containers and cups were stored directly on floor instead of 6 inches above. No deadline listed.  
  • July 22: Warehouse Cafe, 213 N. Third St., Richmond. One noncritical: Soda nozzles needed cleaning. To be corrected immediately. 
  • July 19: Soul Authentic, 1903 N. A St., Richmond. On July 19, one noncritical: Test kit provided doesn’t measure quat sanitizer. To be corrected by July 29. OK to open.  No violations on Aug. 3 or Aug. 10.   

Pre-operational

  • July 26: Biggie Spudz food truck, 641 N.W. L St., Richmond. OK to open. 
  • July 22: Chipotle Mexican Grill of Colorado, 2511 Chester Blvd., Richmond. OK to open.  
  • July 19: Retro Jake’s, 417 N. Eighth St., Richmond. Food service temporarily closed. Contact WCHD for reopening inspection.  
  • July 17: Mexicali, 233 S. 14th St., Richmond. OK to open. 

Complaint investigated

  • July 29: Frisch’s Big Boy, 3704 National Road E., Richmond. Complaint about bare-hand contact. No problem found. No violations found during inspection.

Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
