On Sept. 23, family and friends of Scouting America Troop 100’s Bronson Vogelsong gathered at the Wayne County Veterans Memorial Park for his Eagle scout project dedication. Vogelsong installed a new American flag drop box.
Vogelsong’s mother, Cindy Cox, said he has always been patriotic and wanted to do something that showed respect for the nation and our flag. The project took about a month for Vogelsong to complete.
“He was inspired by his grandfathers who were both Army veterans,” Cox said in an email. She said that there are other boxes in town, but this one is unique, allowing people to drive up and drop off their flags without getting out of their cars.
Park volunteer Michele Thompson said Vogelsong contacted the park’s board with his idea. After presenting his plans at one of their meetings, the board approved the project, which was completed before Memorial Day.
The new drop box is in the veterans park at 7 E. Main St., Richmond. The park is Richmond’s second drop box location, with another located at American Legion Post 65 at 109 N. Sixth St.
According to freedomandglory.com, a flag-disposal box is one of five proper ways to retire an American flag. The others include a proper burial, recycling, burning or giving it to an approved organization like Scouting America, American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars.
