Volunteers, donations enhance Dublin Community Club

After several weeks of renovations, Dublin Community Club is ready for skating enthusiasts and those just looking for a safe Saturday hangout spot.

The volunteer-led rink reopens to the public on Saturday, Feb. 4, for open skating.

On its debut night, special hours of 5-9 p.m. will be offered instead of the usual 6-9 p.m. hours on future Saturdays. Admission is $5 per person, including skate rental.

Although “Dublin” is in the facility’s name, the rink is open to all residents of Wayne and surrounding counties.

Those attending will be able to see the building’s new look, which includes a freshening of the lounge that is nearing completion. Board President Jimmy Lawrence said replacing the carpet is an ongoing goal.

Returning guests might notice that ceilings, walls and skate boxes have been painted, thanks to several in-kind donations of volunteer labor and materials.

Lawrence is grateful for a “very generous donation” of $2,500 from American Legion Post 169 in Cambridge City and $500 from Sons of American Legion, as well as other gifts that have trickled in.

Some desired projects include new exterior doors for about $5,000, and replacing the wooden skating floor for about $75,000. Skaters have been rolling on concrete since a flood destroyed the floor about 20 years ago.

Additional donations toward club operations, renovations and volunteers to oversee public skating and facility rentals are welcome.

Club leaders have planned a Valentine’s Day-themed skate two weekends after opening night. The event will be from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 17, and includes snacks, games and prizes. A one-time price of $3 per couple and $5 per single is planned.

All of the club’s weekend time slots for private parties in February are full, and the club is taking reservations for other dates throughout the year. Rentals are $100 for three hours including skate usage.
